why I cloth diaper

I'm not a hippie. I love lipgloss. I love 4" heels {although I'd trip if I put them on right now}. I hardly leave the house without makeup.

I like natural things. I like buying organic when I can. I still take 20 minute hot showers. I like to try to do what is best for my son. I am just like any other mom, I just may have been given more information than other moms.

When I was pregnant with Cameron, and friend introduced me to the idea of cloth diapering my newborn. YEAH RIGHT were the first words to come out of my mouth. It was gross, it's what my grandma did, and there was no way I'd do that.

The more info I was told, and the more research I did online that brought me to flirting with the idea of cloth diapering. I was afraid to tell Danny, because I knew he'd shoot me down.

A few months went by. I lurked on cloth diapering chatting forums, researched different kinds of diapers, met up with a local store owner... and {gasp} mentioned the idea to Danny. Just as I though, he SHOT it down.

A few weeks went by. I contacted the local store owner, and told her my issue. She encouraged me to bring him down to her house for some information from both her and her husband.

By now I had done all the research. I knew how much money we would save, I knew how many chemicals were in paper diapers, I knew how much waste paper diapers created. I knew in my heart that it just felt right to cloth diaper. Danny and I drove to Chandler (almost an hour drive) to meet with the cloth diapering mom and store owner. We sat down and listened to her and her husband talk for almost an hour. We got to touch all the different diapers, materials, and fabrics. We got to see the diapers in action on her two small children. I was sold... my heart ached to cloth diaper, and I knew my husband was only going along so I'd shut up.

Just as I was wrapping up our conversation, and neatly folding back together all the diapers we had destroyed... Danny says, "so what do we need to buy today to get started?". I about flew out of my seat {I was 7 months pregnant... it's hard for me to fly out of my seat}. I was shocked that he liked it. He didn't even like the idea, he loved it.

After hearing about Tributyl-tin (TBT) {a toxicant pollutant that is known to cause hormonal problems in humans}, a super absorbent polymer (SAP) called sodium polyacrylate that turns urine into crystal gels {this chemical was banned from tampons in 1985 because it is dangerous to humans}, Dioxin {a chemical that bleaches paper diapers... which is a carcinogenic chemical, listed by the EPA as one of the MOST toxic of all cancer causing chemicals} we were both disgusted and sold entirely on cloth diapering. We learned that due the chemicals, babies will suffer from less rashes in cloth diapers because they have soft cloth instead of chemicals against their skin {you don't wear paper underwear}. Another big turning point for us was that paper diapers are more dangerous to little boys than they are to little girls {reason being, scrotal temperature is increased in paper diapers because they do not breathe... and this causes over heating, which can lead to infertility in the future}. We learned that cloth diapering one child, for two years would save us over $1300. We also learned that we would not be contributing to the 30,000,000,000 pounds of diapers taking up landfills in the United States {note that these diapers take over 500 years to decompose}.

After examining the facts you want to vomit. All that goes through your head is, "how can I change this?","How can I save my baby?" "Is it too late for so-and-so's baby?"You sit there in agony, almost pissed off at the FDA for even allowing companies like Huggies and Pampers to stay in business. They'll stay in business, because paper diapering is mostly all America knows. That's all we do. Without all of the chemicals, dyes, and perfumes... you'd be wrapping your baby in a paper towel. Without the chemicals, paper diapers would not do their job.

We left her store, with a FULL set of newborn, small and a few one size cloth diapers in tow. We spent $160, and I was in shock on the drive home. All my research had worked, my constant nagging my husband worked. He had agreed, and this is ALL we talked about on the way home. He was so happy that we went, and agreed that we would cloth diaper our son. {you'll notice, that we're re-using our cloth diapers from Cameron for the new baby... saving even more money}.

To this day, my husband LOVES cloth diapering. If you know him, you probably won't believe this... you'd have to ask him yourself. If we had a huggies diaper and a bumGenius diaper laying side by side, he'd grab the bumGenius. They're easy to put on {really... if Danny can do it, you can too}. They're easy to clean {if you child poops... you just rinse if off. I know it sounds gross, but you just rinse it off into the toilet with your diaper sprayer. It takes 30 seconds. Then you take it outside and plop it in a laundry basket. Every 2-3 days you wash them. Plain and simple}. They're cuter {seriously, have you seen a cloth diaper on? They are so fluffy and cute.} They're better for baby and environment.

No, I don't cloth diaper every single minute of every single day. Yes, I've caved and bought the Kirkland box of diapers, and used every single one of them over the course of a few months. But, I have done my part... my part of what I think is practical, and what has worked for us. You do not have to be in cloth diapers 100% of the time to make a difference for your baby and the environment. Even one cloth diaper a day, or a few diapers on the weekends makes a huge difference {you'd also be surprised to hear how many daycares will cloth diaper, as long as you do the laundry}. When we're home... we usually are in cloth diapers. We enjoy them, and we're proud to be a cloth diapering family.

Why did I open my cloth diapering store? For the same exact reason I was sold on cloth diapers. There are not enough stores in the west valley, there is simply not enough knowledge. To this day, I have had 8 families come to my house... asking the same questions I asked my mentor. I have helped spread the knowledge to 8 families who left my house as cloth diapering families {and yes, both Danny and I talk to the families}. Sure, I fill orders online all the time... but it's the true meetings and chats that I truly love.

Just as I expected, I came back from vacation yesterday... and today we have SOLD OUT of our BumGenius 4.0 diapers.

All our pre-orders (and even some orders yesterday and today) are boxed, and ready to go out Priority mail first thing tomorrow morning. If you are waiting for your order, you should have it this week! (your tracking info has already been sent)

Generally I only order about 2-4 dozen of each color... so they go fast!

I feel like it's been forever since I've posted to this blog! Well, in fact... it has been forever.

Just a quick update on our store:

Sudzy Baby Products - The business of Sudzy Baby was sold from one mom to another. While the sale and move is taking place, we're holding off on ordering from Sudzy Baby. I have not personally talked to the new owner yet, but hopefully we'll communicate shortly! If you would like a Sudzy Baby product right away, I suggest you going directly to their website (click HERE to be redirected to their site). The new owner is a great mom that I've known online, and I can't wait to communicate with her about stocking her products again. (we still do have a few Sudzy Baby products left, the website tells all)

Moby Wraps- Moby Wraps are our best selling item right now! It seems that with summer coming, everyone wants a moby wrap! We have only a few colors left until we get our next order in. We will not expect our next order until early July. Thanks for your patience! (always contact me via phone or email to see exactly what colors we have in. The website is NOT always correct)

Bum Genius Flip- The ever so popular Flip diapers were here... and gone as fast as they came in. We had them in and out SO fast. They are still on backorder for us, so it will be a while before we get them in. Thanks again, for your patience.

Bum Genius Organic Diapers- We have decided not to carry these in our stock. We CAN order them, but we just don't sell enough to keep on our shelves. If you would like to order Bum Genius Organic diapers, please just let me know... and then allow 4 weeks for them to come in. All orders will be placed, as soon as the diapers are paid for.

Bum Genius 3.0 Diapers- It is very hard for me to keep these in stock! It seems like we get 12 dozen in, and they are sold out within five days! (great... but not when you can only order them once per month!) Like many other products, please always check before ordering these to make sure they are in stock. If you plan on making a larger order (12 or more) it's more than likely that we will have you place the order with us, and then we will place the order with Cotton Babies. Like other products, they generally take no more than 4 weeks to come in.

We're having a baby! That's right... Green Chic Mama is adding a baby to the mix! Sorry for my slow responses to emails and phone calls.... or orders that go out a day later than expected! I've been knocked flat on my butt as I 'suffer' through this first trimester! Luckily, the second trimester will greet me in about 2 weeks! A few updates with our store:

We are currently low or out of stock on MANY items. This is a horrible thing for a store, but it means that the business is doing awesome. I'm trying to keep on top of reorders as fast as possible, but unfortunately some wholesale companies only let me order once per month.

Here is the rundown on some of our popular items:

Moby Wraps are currently sold out, but our next order will be here by the end of the month.

BumGenius! 3.0 diapers are low (as usual). They come in, and go so fast! As of right now, we have 4 of each for the bright colors.

Flip diapers are completely sold out! They were gone in just ONE day. Our next order should be here in February, and we will have both organic and stay dry, as well as disposables in stock.

BumGenius! Diaper Detergent is running low (I have ONE box left).

Wahmies wet bags are back in stock, as well as Wahmies pail liners. I'm working with my website on restocking them. If you would like to know the colors and patterns we have in, please contact me.

Sudzy Baby Healing Hemp Balm is out again, and more should be here by the beginning of February.

Hi all!

It's that time of year, when myself and the GCM staff enjoy a luxurious week off! This year (as all other years in the past) we're headed to San Deigo, California from Saturday July 18th through Saturday July 25th.

Please note that ANY orders placed during that time frame will NOT ship out until Monday the 27th. Sorry, yet again for the frustration!

Thank you for your patience with all the orders that were delayed this week due to our move. We're happy in our new place... but it's soooo strange having the items in different locations. It's a little harder to keep track of items, but we'll have it down in no time. Yes, we are still available for local pick up and demonstrations. Our store will be moving to it's permanent location come October of this year.

Store Update

Hi everyone!

Our store is MOVING this weekend. We won't be in our permanent location until November... but until then, we're packing up, and will be located with the in-laws for a while!

Due to the move, all orders that are placed Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday (July 9-12th) will NOT ship out until Monday July 13th. As usual, all orders will ship USPS Priority and should arrive in no time. Pick up orders placed from the 9th-12th will also be available for pick up anytime after Monday July 13th. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Local pick up's will still be available while we are at the in-laws. The house is only about 1/2 mile from where we were before, so it should make no difference. I will still have a room "boutique" that the store will be ran out of.

Reviewing... Huggies Pure and Natural PAPER diapers

today, I went to the store and bought the new Huggies Pure & Natural Diapers.

Needless to say, I bought a 46 pack for $18.49, plus tax.

This is a grand total of: $0.43 per diaper. That is right, 43 cents per diaper!

They are made with organic cotton, are fragrance free, include aloe & vitamin E, are made with less ink (I'm assuming on the outside of the diaper), and the inner liner is made with renewable materials.

BUT

Like all other Huggies diapers, these still contain a warning on the side of the package, stating: HUGGIES diapers contain absorbent particles that gel when whet. If you notice a small amount of gel like material on your baby's skin, it back be removed with baby wipe.

SO, make your own conclusions... but mine is that this "pure and natural product" still contains sodium polyacrylate... so even though it's much better for baby than the original Huggies, it's still not better than cloth for babies skin at all! Those dangerous chemicals are still there. Who can blame them? They HAVE to be there, there is NO other ingredient that can absorb liquid, no matter how pure and natural they would like them to be.

The diapers hold fine, and so far no leaks. I would never use it overnight, because it feels way too thin. (my baby can't wear any paper diaper overnight without a leak though)

Will I use them: yes, for the 5% of time that Cameron is not in cloth.

Do I recommend them: NO (hehe). I never recommend paper diapers. But... if you HAVE to use them, I think these should be the ones you use.

What are my personal opinions: I think it's great that paper diapers are TRYING to become more environmentally friendly, and better for baby. But I still know that they will take up our landfill space for 500 years, still contain "gel" as they call it, cost an ARM AND A LEG, and are not cute what-so-ever. They are packaged in eco-friendly 20% recyclable material, which I think is great. There are a lot of bad things about paper diapers that just can't be changed. BUT due to their attempt (and ok, I guess they really are better than regular) at being pure and natural, I like them... for paper. As a 'green' mama, I feel just a little better using these than regular Huggies.

What is the diaper like?: They feel just like a Pampers Swaddlers diaper. They are much softer than traditional Huggies. The inside feels just like a Huggies Gentile Care diaper, I've noticed no difference. They hold the same as a Huggies Gentile Care diaper, which is 3 hours max for my son.

Lets face it. No one enjoys tacking $20.00 onto their grocery bill every week. No one likes using something once and throwing it away. No one likes how bad your garage smells the day before trash pick up... etc. Here are the facts I've compiled on how much money you can save.

With ever so rising diaper costs, and ever so diminishing budgets... I have a solution for you!

THE BREAKDOWN OF DISPOSABLE DIAPERS

Stats:

Disposable (or paper) diapers run between $0.18 to $0.21 per diaper.

A baby uses on average 10 diapers per day.

A baby is in diapers on average for 2.5 years.

A family will spend on average $50.00 per 2.5 years on accessories. (wipes, creams, trash bags)

Doing the Math:

Per Day:

$0.18 x 10 = $1.80 (per day in cheap diapers)

$0.21 x 10 = $2.10 (per day in "pampers" or "huggies" diapers)

Per Year:

$1.80 x 365 = $657.00 (one year in cheap diapers)

$2.10 x 365 = $766.50 (one year in "pampers" or "huggies" diapers)

For 2.5 Years:

$657.00 x 2.5 = $1,642.50 (2.5 years in cheap diapers)

$766.50 x 2.5 = $1,916.25 (2.5 years in "pampers" or "huggies" diapers)

Grand totals: (with accessories)

$1,642.50 + $50.00 = $1,692.50

$1,916.25 + $50.00 = $1,966.25

Average cost of disposable diapers, for 2.5 years (one child) is : $1,829.38

these are items that you use once, and throw away.

A baby needs about 18-24 cloth diapers, on average.

Most cloth diapers fit babies from 7-35 pounds. This means that you buy diapers ONCE.

Cloth diapers are designed to work for over 5 years. This means that they can be used on multiple children.

A family will spend about $50.00 on accessories over 2.5 years. (wet bag, pail liner, creams, diaper sprayer)

Yes, you use water to wash out the diapers. Water, unlike landfills is a recyclable source. Water is used to wash diapers, and then recycled back into the earth. Once a disposable is thrown into a landfill, it sits there for 500 years.

A family will spend on average a total of $50.00 over 2.5 years on washing diapers.

Doing the Math:

Buying Diapers Once:

Why Cloth Diaper

Hi! Welcome to our blog!

A little about Green Chic Mama

Hi! I'm Ali. I'm a stay at home, working mama... and am about to embark in opening my own cloth diapering business! I'm just getting it all set up, getting orders in and stored nicely in my home, and getting the website ready :)

I have a grand opening planned for May 1st, but we're suffering through a delay in the state of Arizona in regards to business licenses... I may have to postpone it a few weeks (which would NOT be cool!) I'll keep this site updated, and will know more in the next few days.

I have a one year old son, which whom I cloth diaper and parent naturally. I fell in love with doing this, therefore decided to spread my love to other parents and open my store.

Not only do I have top selling cloth diapers (which are functional, cute, and modern), I sell baby carriers, natural skin care, and natural laundry care. I answer any questions that you can throw at me... and I stick around when you need some help. I have plans in holding classes and how to seminars.
